Backup Power for CCTV: Why a UPS Matters During Outages
A CCTV system with no backup power stops recording the moment the electricity does, often exactly when it matters most. Here's what a UPS adds and how to size one.
What Happens to a CCTV System During a Power Cut
Without backup power, an NVR or DVR simply stops recording the instant mains power drops, and cameras go dark until power is restored. This creates a gap in your footage precisely when an incident is arguably more likely: many break-ins and thefts are timed around exactly this kind of disruption.
What a UPS Actually Does
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a battery backup that sits between the mains power and your NVR or DVR, kicking in instantly (with no gap) when mains power drops. It keeps the recorder, and depending on the setup, some or all of the cameras, running for a defined period until either power returns or the battery runs down.
How Long a UPS Actually Lasts
Runtime depends on the UPS capacity and how much equipment it's supporting: a unit sized just for the NVR itself can often run for an hour or more, while one also supporting several PoE cameras will run shorter. It's worth being clear about what you actually need backed up (just the recorder, or the recorder and cameras) when sizing a UPS.
Network Equipment Needs Power Too
If your cameras are IP-based and rely on a network switch or router, that equipment needs backup power as well: a UPS on the NVR alone doesn't help if the network connecting it to the cameras goes down in the same outage. This is a common gap in setups where backup power was added as an afterthought rather than planned with the full system in mind.
Checking the UPS Is Part of Good Maintenance
A UPS battery degrades over time and eventually stops holding a useful charge, often without any obvious sign until it's tested during an actual outage. Including a UPS battery check as part of a scheduled maintenance visit is the only reliable way to know it'll actually work when you need it.
