Without backup power, an NVR or DVR simply stops recording the instant mains power drops, and cameras go dark until power is restored. This creates a gap in your footage precisely when an incident is arguably more likely: many break-ins and thefts are timed around exactly this kind of disruption.

What a UPS Actually Does

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a battery backup that sits between the mains power and your NVR or DVR, kicking in instantly, with no gap, when mains power drops. It keeps the recorder, and depending on the setup, some or all of the cameras, running for a defined period until either power returns or the battery runs down.

How Long a UPS Actually Lasts

Runtime depends on the UPS capacity and how much equipment it's supporting: a unit sized just for the NVR itself can often run for an hour or more, while one also supporting several PoE cameras will run shorter.

• ✓ UPS capacity: how much charge it can store
• ✓ How much equipment it's backing up: just the NVR, or the NVR plus several PoE cameras too
• ✓ Battery age and condition, which degrades over time

Network Equipment Needs Power Too

If your cameras are IP-based and rely on a network switch or router, that equipment needs backup power as well: a UPS on the NVR alone doesn't help if the network connecting it to the cameras goes down in the same outage. This is a common gap in setups where backup power was added as an afterthought rather than planned with the full system in mind.

Checking the UPS Is Part of Good Maintenance

A UPS battery degrades over time and eventually stops holding a useful charge, often without any obvious sign until it's tested during an actual outage. Including a UPS battery check as part of a scheduled maintenance visit is the only reliable way to know it'll actually work when you need it.

When a UPS Alone Isn't Enough

A UPS is built for short gaps measured in minutes or a couple of hours, not an extended outage. Properties that already run a generator for longer power cuts should make sure the CCTV system's power circuit is actually wired into that generator's coverage, since a UPS will simply run down and the system will still go dark if the outage outlasts the battery and nothing else picks up the load. For sites where extended outages are a real possibility, the UPS and generator are worth planning as a pair rather than assuming either one alone covers it.

UPS Checklist for a CCTV System

• ✓ NVR/DVR covered, at minimum
• ✓ Network switch or router covered too, if cameras are IP-based
• ✓ Runtime matched to how long outages actually last at your property, not just a generic figure
• ✓ Battery condition checked as part of scheduled maintenance, not left untested until an outage happens
• ✓ A generator plan in place for sites where outages regularly outlast UPS runtime
