Camera systems are widely installed across UAE homes, businesses, and public spaces, and property owners are generally free to monitor their own premises for security purposes. That said, "generally permitted" isn't the same as "anything goes." How and where you point cameras still matters, especially where it affects other people's privacy.
Keep Cameras Pointed at Your Own Property
A common and important guideline is to avoid pointing cameras directly into a neighboring property, whether through a neighbor's window, into their garden, or across a shared boundary in a way that captures their private space. Angling cameras to cover your own gate, driveway, and entrances rather than a neighbor's property avoids most privacy disputes before they start.
Public and Semi-Public Areas Need Extra Care
Businesses recording semi-public areas, such as a shop floor, a building lobby, or a hotel corridor, are on firmer ground than recording private spaces, but should still avoid areas where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy, such as washrooms or changing rooms. This is one of the reasons camera placement in schools, hotels, and offices deserves deliberate thought rather than blanket coverage.
Signage and Notice
Letting people know a space is under camera surveillance, with a simple sign at an entrance, is good practice for businesses and helps set clear expectations for staff, customers, and visitors. It's a small step that reduces disputes about whether recording was appropriate in a given area.
