Motion Detection vs. Continuous Recording: Which Saves You More Storage and Hassle?

How Continuous Recording Works
Continuous recording keeps every camera writing footage around the clock, regardless of whether anything is happening in frame. This guarantees nothing is missed, which matters most for entry points and other areas where you need certainty that footage exists for any given moment, but it uses significantly more storage than motion-based recording.
How Motion-Based Recording Works
Motion-based recording only starts writing footage when the camera detects movement in its frame (or a defined detection zone within it), which can cut storage use dramatically on cameras covering quiet areas. The trade-off is that poorly tuned motion sensitivity can either miss subtle movement or, more commonly, trigger constantly from irrelevant motion like shadows or moving branches.
Where Continuous Recording Is Worth the Storage Cost
Entrances, till points, and other areas where you need absolute certainty that footage exists for every moment are usually worth recording continuously, even at the higher storage cost. These are also often the cameras where the few seconds before motion is detected, which motion-triggered recording can miss, matter most.
Where Motion-Based Recording Makes Sense
Quieter areas, such as a back perimeter, a storage yard, or a corridor that's rarely used, are good candidates for motion-based recording, since the storage savings are real and the odds of missing something in the split-second before triggering are lower given how little regularly happens there.
A Mixed Approach Is Usually Best
Most well-planned systems don't apply one recording mode across every camera: continuous recording on the cameras that matter most, motion-based on the rest, with detection zones and sensitivity properly tuned during installation. This balances storage cost against the certainty of having footage exactly when you need it.
