5 Common CCTV Installation Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
A camera system that's poorly planned can leave real gaps even with a high camera count. Here are the mistakes that show up most often, and how a proper site survey avoids them.
Mistake 1: Cameras Pointed Into Direct Sunlight or Glare
A camera aimed toward a bright window, an open sky, or direct afternoon sun often produces washed-out, unusable footage of anything in front of it, especially without wide dynamic range (WDR) support. This is one of the most common installation errors, and it's usually avoidable simply by checking sun position and glare at different times of day before finalizing camera angles.
Mistake 2: Skipping a Proper Site Walk-Through
Planning a camera layout from a floor plan alone, without actually walking the property, tends to miss real-world obstructions, such as a tree that will grow into frame, a parked delivery van that regularly blocks a driveway camera, or furniture that shifts a sightline. A physical walk-through at installation time catches these before they become permanent blind spots.
Mistake 3: Underestimating Storage Needs
It's common to size storage for the camera count on day one without accounting for higher resolutions, longer retention periods, or future camera additions. Running out of storage capacity means either shortening retention (less footage history available) or needing an upgrade sooner than planned, both avoidable with slightly more headroom built in from the start.
Mistake 4: Using Indoor-Rated Cameras Outdoors
An indoor camera used outdoors, even under a small overhang, tends to fail faster in UAE heat and dust than a properly IP66-rated outdoor unit. The cost saving upfront is usually outweighed by an earlier replacement, so it's worth confirming the actual rating of any outdoor camera rather than assuming it's suitable.
Mistake 5: No Plan for Ongoing Maintenance
A system that's never serviced after installation gradually degrades: lenses collect dust, storage drives age, firmware falls behind, often without anyone noticing until footage is actually needed and isn't there. Treating maintenance as part of the plan from day one, rather than an afterthought, is what keeps a system reliable years down the line.
