How Local Storage Works
With local storage, footage is written directly to a hard drive inside an NVR or DVR unit on-site. Recording continues even if the internet connection drops, and there's no ongoing subscription fee: you pay once for the storage capacity. The trade-off is that if the recorder itself is damaged, stolen, or fails, that footage can be lost along with it.
How Cloud Storage Works
Cloud storage uploads footage (continuously or on motion) to an off-site server, so it survives even if the on-site equipment is damaged or stolen. It also makes remote viewing and footage retrieval more convenient: you can often pull a clip from a phone without needing to be near the recorder. The trade-off is an ongoing subscription cost and a dependency on a stable internet connection to keep uploading.
Retention Periods Matter More Than the Method
Whichever method you choose, the more important question is how many days of footage you actually retain before it's overwritten. Retail and hospitality sites often want at least 30 days to cover disputes that surface after the fact; a quieter site might be fine with 14. Retention period is usually a bigger factor in your final cost than the storage method itself.
A Hybrid Approach Is Common
Many UAE businesses run local storage as the primary, continuous record, with cloud storage layered on top for convenience: remote viewing, instant alerts, and an off-site backup of the footage that matters most. This gets the reliability of local recording without giving up the flexibility of checking in from anywhere.
What Drives the Decision
Internet reliability at the site, how often you need remote access, budget for an ongoing subscription, and how critical it is that footage survives physical damage to the equipment are the real factors. A single villa with a stable connection has very different needs from a multi-site retail business that wants every location visible from one dashboard.
